Law School Grants

Further education is an expensive business, and going to some of the top schools can require an investment of several thousand dollars a year. In order to encourage more students from lower income groups into education, there are funds being made available in the form of school and college grants to enable more students to access college education and prepare themselves for a career in the future. One of the areas of education where grants are available is to study at Law School, which is historically one of the most expensive fields of study at College level. There are many different avenues available for accessing these law school grants.

Grants from Individual Schools

Many Law Schools have their own charitable funds or legacies from alumni which are used to support students through their studies at the college. All will have different criteria for qualifying for funds, and the amount given will depend on the organization. Some charities may be focused on supporting students from certain ethnic groups or geographical locations. Some may cover tuition fees and other expenses entirely; others will only cover part of the cost. Most institutions award grants to students based on academic merit as well as personal circumstances. It is wise to not focus too directly on one particular Law School where you would like to study, but consider a range of options based on both the courses available and the grant assistance that the institution offers to students. It is also worth looking at the grants offered by the American Bar Association, who fund law students in financial need.

Federal Grants

Central government also has funds available to help prospective students. In order to apply for these school grants, the student has to fill in forms online, or collect a paper version from a government office or their college. The grants are known as Pell Grants after the Senator who introduced the system, and although they will not cover full tuition fees they will go some way towards meeting the cost. They are awarded for all fields of study, including study at Law School. Eligibility for the grants is based on the financial circumstances of both the student and their family, and once awarded the grants can be both backdated and reassessed when or if circumstances change. Only one form needs to be completed to apply for a Pell Grant and the application process is simple and easy to navigate.

State Specific Grants

All states have their own programs to support education. The easiest way to find out what is available in any particular state is to search online to find relevant schemes. As there are many different sorts of funds available, the eligibility criteria varies greatly, but most are based on economic circumstances and financial need. The downside of the state grants is that many are administered separately, which means completing different application forms for each grant award the student is seeking. This process might take some considerable time to complete. Scholarships and grants awarded at state level are often targeted at specific groups to encourage wider participation in further education.
